Top MuleBar customer, friend and athlete, Ptol Slattery, windsurfs the channel.
I thought that you both might like to enjoy these cheeky photos of me windsurfing on Saturday 4th October
Here is the official tracking by my Garmin GPS watch that was on my wrist & recorded 29 miles, max speed 27.2mph & average speed 14.7mph, in 2 hours & 02 seconds beach to beach.
Here's a 90 second video of me windsurfing off Hayling Island
The Straights of Dover are generally recognised to be the busiest shipping lanes in the world with over 500 massive boats a day going through them.
So now I have achieved the first goal of making the crossing, there are only 6 other known people in the world to the best of my knowledge that have ever done this before on a windsurfing board.
My next goal is still to break the one hour record & I know that I have the board speed & the stamina & the ability to do so when we get great conditions for a record attempt.
This time was good & a totally wonderful thing to do.
However I was “under-powered” for most if not all of the crossing using my 6 meter sail as the wind wasn’t as strong 5 miles off France as we thought it would be & by England the wind was dropping to almost zero, hence it took twice as long as I expected / wanted it to. Had I used my 7.0 meter sail the time would have been much quicker.
To be fair the wind direction required a 29 mile crossing as opposed to a 22 mile crossing that the Great Baron did when he went from Cap Gris Nez to Dover, so he did 75% of the distance that I did on this crossing.
Have a great week & I’d promised to tell you both when I’d finally managed it. Your MuleBar energy bars, energy gels and protein recovery bars have helped me enormously.
This has been an obsession for a very long time.
Cheers & Best Wishes
